MARANATHA: COME HOLY SPIRIT - NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT
NOVENA
TO THE HOLY SPIRIT
The
Holy Spirit Novena, also known as the Pentecost Novena, is considered the
oldest of all novenas. It draws its origins from Jesus telling his
apostles to remain in Jerusalem and await the gift of the Holy Spirit: “While
meeting with them, he enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait
for 'the promise of the Father about which you have heard me speak.” Acts
1: 4-5. The Apostles, together with the Blessed Virgin Mary and other women,
prayed for nine days before receiving the Holy Spirit on Pentecost.
On
May 4, 1897, Pope Leo XIII proclaimed: “We decree and command that
throughout the whole Church, this year and in every subsequent year, a novena
shall take place before Pentecost in all parish churches.” Pope John Paul
II reiterated Pope Leo’s command for a worldwide Pentecost novena, although the
novena can be prayed at any time, not only before Pentecost.
Try
to go to Mass daily throughout the novena and pray for the outpouring of the
Spirit. If you are unable to attend Mass, read and reflect upon the daily
readings. Even though we pray this novena as a preparation for the feast of
Pentecost, you can also pray a novena to the Holy Spirit any time that you
want. So, let us pray with great confidence and trust in our God who is all
Good and Loving.

01: FOR CHARITY
In
the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
·
ACT OF CONSECRATION TO THE HOLY
SPIRIT
On
my knees before the great multitude of heavenly witnesses, I offer myself, soul
and body to Thee, Eternal Spirit of God. I adore the brightness of Thy
purity, the unerring keenness of Thy justice, and the might of Thy love.
Thou art the Strength and Light of my soul. In Thee I live and move and
have my being. I desire never to grieve Thee by my unfaithfulness to
grace, and I pray with all my heart to be kept from the smallest sin against
Thee. Make me faithful in every thought and grant that I may always listen to
Thy voice, watch for Thy light, and follow Thy gracious inspirations. I
cling to Thee and give myself to Thee, and I ask Thee, by Thy compassion, to
watch over me in my weakness. Holding the pierced Feet of Jesus, looking
at His Five Wounds, trusting in His Precious Blood, and adoring his open side
and stricken heart, I implore Thee, Adorable Spirit, Helper of my infirmity, so
to keep me in Thy grace that I may never sin against Thee with the sin which
Thou will not forgive. Give me grace, O Holy Spirit, Spirit of the Father and
of the Son, to say to Thee always and everywhere, “Speak Lord for Thy servant
hears.”
Amen.
·
For the grace of Charity
O
Holy Spirit, by Your power, Christ was raised from the dead to save us all. By
Your grace, miracles are performed in Jesus’ name. By Your love, we are
protected from evil. And so, we ask with humility and a beggar’s heart for Your
gift of Charity within us. The great charity of all the host of Saints is only
made possible by your power, O Divine Spirit. Increase in me, the virtue of
charity that I may love as God loves with the selflessness of the Saints.
Amen.

Supernatural
power came and continues to come to you from the Holy Spirit.
The Book of Acts is
referred to as the Gospel of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will remind you
to pray and pray in you according to God’s will. “The Spirit too helps us in our
weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we ought; but the Spirit Himself
makes intercession for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in speech. (Romans 8:26-27)
“For the Holy Spirit will
teach you at that time what you should say” (Luke 12:12).
“If you then… know how to
give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in Heaven give
the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
(Luke 11:13).
“If you love Me, you will
keep My commandments. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another
Counselor to be with you forever, the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept
Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows him. But you know Him, for He lives
with you and will be in you” (John 14:15-17).
“But the Counselor, the
Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things
and will remind you of everything I have said to you” (John
14:26).
“But when He, the Spirit
of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth.” (John
16:13).
“See, I am going to send
down upon you the promise of My Father.
Remain here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on
high” (Luke 24:48-49)
“And with that Jesus
breathed on them and said, 'Receive the Holy Spirit” (John
20:22).
“No one can say ‘Jesus is
Lord,’ except by the grace of the Holy Spirit” (1Cor
12:1-11).
